Growing awareness of environmental issues, the widespread sentiment of social inequality, and growing hypercapitalism, which may appear uncontrollable, are leading to increasing demand for organisations’ commitment to the environment and human rights.
The market now requires companies not only to create value through economic results – which are mainly to the shareholders’ advantage – but also to demonstrate their commitment to society by creating jobs, complying with rules, protecting the environment, and caring for the community in the broadest sense of the word. And let’s not forget that, in today’s globalised and hyperconnected world, any criticism or faux pas is exposed for the whole world to see, and can damage a company’s reputation (B2C) or exclude that company from the supply chain (B2B).
From the 1970s, many models were developed to provide organisations with a method to demonstrate their social commitment, with some causes being more specific (e.g. occupational safety, the environment) and others more integrated. More recently, the concept of sustainable development has become a primary driver of the corporate image.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) models are based on the same pillars as sustainable development, i.e. economic, environmental, and social sustainability. Sustainable development consists in meeting society’s requirements without compromising the environment and the opportunities for future generations to meet their needs.
The ISO 26000 standard is the most widely recognised international standard on corporate social responsibility. This standard is NOT certifiable (unlike ISO 9001); however, many companies request third-party audits. Those who want to develop a CSR management system can rely on this model, which also has the advantage of being compared to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards.
An element that proves a company’s social responsibility is the sustainability report, which summarises the measures taken, their results, and the goals regarding social responsibility (see ISO 26000). It’s good practice to indicate the results achieved through the corresponding indicators according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Although this document is not required by ISO 26000, it is certainly an excellent way to show how its principles are applied.
