Das Thema der sozialen Verantwortung von Unternehmen ist mittlerweile nicht nur für Grossunternehmen zu einem zentralen Punkt geworden, der nicht länger ignoriert werden kann.
Angesichts der wachsenden Sensibilität grosser Teile der Gesellschaft für Umweltfragen, des weit verbreiteten Gefühls massloser sozialer Ungleichheiten und des Anwachsens eines Hyperkapitalismus, der ungezügelt und unkontrollierbar erscheinen mag, wird die Forderung nach einem Engagement von Unternehmen zur Verteidigung der Menschenrechte und der Umwelt immer lauter.
Die ISO-Norm 26000 ist für den Bereich CSR (auf Deutsch: Soziale Verantwortung von Unternehmen) gegenwärtig der anerkannteste internationale Standard. Die Norm ist NICHT zertifizierbar (im Gegensatz beispielsweise zur ISO-Norm 9001), jedoch hat sich inzwischen die Praxis durchgesetzt, eine unabhängige Prüfung durch einen Dritten anzufordern. Für Unternehmen, die ein Managementsystem für die soziale Verantwortung von Unternehmen entwickeln wollen, ist dieses Modell mit Sicherheit geeignet. Es hat zudem den Vorteil, dass es mit den GRI-Standards verglichen werden kann.
Es handelt sich dabei um ein grundlegendes Element, um die eigene soziale Verantwortung darzulegen. Dies geschieht über die Erstellung eines Nachhaltigkeitsberichts, in dem die Massnahmen (und damit die Ergebnisse) und Unternehmensziele unter Bezugnahme auf die grundlegenden Themen der sozialen Verantwortung kurz zusammengefasst werden (siehe ISO-Norm 26000). Es ist empfehlenswert, die mit den entsprechenden Indikatoren erzielten Ergebnisse nach den Kriterien der GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) darzustellen. Obwohl dieses Dokument in der ISO-Norm 26000 nicht ausdrücklich vorgesehen ist, ist es ohne Frage ein ausgezeichnetes Mittel, um der Öffentlichkeit die Anwendung ihrer Grundsätze aufzuzeigen.
