Le sentiment général du « marché » exige que les entreprises ne se limitent pas à créer de la valeur par des résultats économiques qui, lorsqu'ils sont positifs, profitent cependant principalement aux actionnaires, mais qu'elles manifestent leur comportement en faveur de la société par la création de travail, le respect des règles, la protection de l'environnement et en général un engagement envers la société dans son sens le plus large de communauté humaine. De plus, n'oublions pas comment dans le monde globalisé et hyper-connecté d'aujourd'hui, chaque critique ou faux pas commis par une entreprise est immédiatement mis à la disposition du monde entier et peut entraîner une perte de réputation immédiate et lourde (dans le domaine B2C) ou une expulsion des chaînes d'approvisionnement (dans le domaine du B2B).
Depuis les années 1970, de nombreux modèles ont été développés afin de fournir aux organisations un moyen de démontrer leur engagement social, certains portant sur des enjeux spécifiques (ex. sécurité au travail, protection de l'environnement) et d'autres plus intégrés. Plus récemment, le concept de "développement durable" s'est imposé comme un paradigme prioritaire, un moteur essentiel de l'image de l'entreprise.
Les modèles RSE (Responsabilité Sociétale des Entreprises) reposent sur les trois mêmes piliers fondamentaux du concept de "développement durable" ou durabilité économique, environnementale et sociale et sont la traduction de ce concept dans le champ d'action des entreprises. Comme on le sait, le développement durable consiste à satisfaire les besoins de la société en vivant dans les limites écologiques de la planète et sans compromettre la possibilité pour les générations futures de satisfaire leurs propres besoins.
La norme ISO 26000 est actuellement la norme internationale la plus reconnue en matière de RSE ou de responsabilité sociale des entreprises. La norme n'est PAS certifiable (contrairement par exemple à la norme ISO 9001) mais il est d'usage de demander un audit indépendant à un tiers. Ceux qui entendent développer un système de management de la responsabilité sociale des entreprises peuvent sans aucun doute s'appuyer sur ce modèle qui a également l'avantage de pouvoir être comparé aux standards GRI.
Un élément substantiel dans la démonstration de sa responsabilité sociale est donné par la rédaction du rapport de développement durable, un document qui, en synthèse extrême, résume les actions (et donc les résultats) et les objectifs de l'entreprise avec des références aux thèmes fondamentaux de la responsabilité sociale (voir ISO 26000). Il est de bonne pratique d'indiquer les résultats obtenus au travers des indicateurs correspondants selon les critères GRI (Global Reporting Initiative). Bien que ce document ne soit pas expressément prévu par la norme ISO 26000, il s'agit sans aucun doute d'un excellent moyen de témoigner à l'extérieur de l'application de ses principes.
